Novell Filr has been out for a few months now, and it’s running fine. Recently we completed our “road test” with the IT group of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Munich and it was a great success.

Dr. Degenhardt and Christian Giese summarized the results of this test and their experiences, and put them down in an article which now is available online at the LANLine homepage.

Using the LRZ’s directory service and data stores, our Filr installation smoothly manages approximately 50,000 users, six digit file counts and a complex structure of access rights. The product satisfies the demands of both sides of the table – the IT administrators and the end users. Sensitive data stays on their own servers and nevertheless, the users can access the information they need with every device, from everywhere and on top of that, they can easily share the information – if they’re allowed to do so (on the specific item/by the file system and Filr ACLs).
